Stranraer

Whilst Stranraer may not be the most attractive of towns, it serves it purpose of being the main port in Scotland for serving Northern Ireland, therefore there is a great deal of through traffic.

Stranraer is located on the shores of Loch Ryan, located on the Rhinns of Galloway. It's a windswept peninsula that is shaped like a pick-axe head on the end of the coast of Solway. The town has a population of 10,700, many of which work for the port's business.

Belfast

Belfast is the principal gateway to Northern Ireland. Two thirds of sea bourne trade in Northern Ireland and a quarter of sea bourne trade for the whole of Ireland is handled at Belfast. Over 9,000 vessels carrying over 2 million passengers and half a million units of freight pass through each year.

During the reign of James I in 1613, he incorporated the town of Belfast as a borough. As part of this there was provision for a quay of wharf to be established. Thus a quay was built where the Rivers Lagan and Fearset meet. This was how the port of Belfast was established.

Trade continued to expand through the century so much the quay required expanding so that more ships could be accommodated. Again in the 18th century it had to be expanded again when the town replaced Carrickfergus as the pre-eminent port in Ulster. In 1785 an act was passed by the Irish Parliament to create the rather clumsily titled Corporation for Preserving and Improving the Port and Harbour of Belfast - otherwise known as the “Ballast Board”. A new channel was built to make the port deeper, with less bends and the quays were made more adequate. The port you see today is the result of much love and care.
