Red Funnel Ferries
Red Funnel ferries date back to 1861, when the Southampton Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Public Limited Company was formed. The company is the original operator to the Isle of Wight and has a distinguished and colourful history spanning over 140 years. In 1885 the company purchased the New Southampton Steam Towing Company. The tug boat ownership played a major part in it's success. In 1912 the pride of the White Star Line, The Titanic launched it's fateful maiden voyage from Southampton Docks assisted by Red Funnel tug boats. Red Funnel Ferries, as it became known as in 1935, is world renowned for it's high tech ferries operating it's daily, round the clock service. It has one of the most modern fleets including catamaran's and roll-on roll-off car ferries. Red Funnel Towage was sold in 2002 to Australian company Adsteam Marine Ltd for AU$25m as the group decides to concentrate on it's ferry and road transport interests. Red Funnel can now also offer shorts breaks and package holidays to and from the Isle of Wight including ferry travel. Red Funnel can also provide information on places to visit.
