Whilst it may not have the quickest journey times to France and Spain, it gives the passenger a more relaxing enjoyable journey.

Portsmouth itself is the Royal Navy's historical home, the port is just north of the navel base. There's plenty to do at the terminal building, a gift shop and newsagent, a licensed bar, a cafeteria, a bureau de change, a cash point, a baby changing room, payphones, photo booths and public fax machine. At the end of the boarding lanes is another "Travel Centre" which contains a cafeteria, bureau de change, and gift shops.

Le Havre

The port of Le Havre was founded in 1517 by King Francis I. It is now the 2nd biggest port in France. It's on the mouth of the river Seine and it's the closest port to Paris at 200km away.

Rouen, the capital city of Normandy is 55 miles south of Le Havre. Rouen has some excellent museums and churches and there's a flea market on Sundays.

Le Havre was another French town devastated during the Second World War, but it has since recovered and been rebuilt into a bustling and lively town with a thriving boating industry as well as being the largest foreign trade port in France.

There's also plenty of sightseeing and shopping in Le Havre. The street markets and shopping centres are the most popular ways to shop. Near the P&O terminal is the Quartier St Francois which has a fish market every afternoon in addition to charming bars and restaurants. The Quartier St Vincent is within five minutes walking distance from the town hall and has traditional boutiques open in the mornings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

There's plenty of restaurants to choose from, ranging from seafood to creperies to brasseries to saladeries and pizzerias. Most of which are within minutes walk from the waterfront.
