Portsmouth - Cherbourg Ferry
The Portsmouth to Cherbourg ferry operates seven times a day. Sailings take 2 hours, 45 minutes on the seasonal Fastcraft ferry. Crossings on the regular ferry take 5 hours during the day and about 8 hours at night. PortsmouthPortsmouth is the second busiest port in the UK, each year 3.5 million people travel from Portsmouth to Continental Europe. It has excellent road links from London via the M3 and A3. Whilst it may not have the quickest journey times to France and Spain, it gives the passenger a more relaxing enjoyable journey. Portsmouth itself is the Royal Navy's historical home, the port is just north of the navel base. There's plenty to do at the terminal building, a gift shop and newsagent, a licensed bar, a cafeteria, a bureau de change, a cash point, a baby changing room, payphones, photo booths and public fax machine. At the end of the boarding lanes is another "Travel Centre" which contains a cafeteria, bureau de change, and gift shops. CherbourgThe town of Cherbourg is overlooked by the 'Fort du Roule', which on a clear day gives fantastic views over the town. The history of Cherbourg dates back to Roman times, but today it is a bustling modern town. It's worth spending time in the town, rather than rush on and off the ferry to Portsmouth and there's a number of activities to pass the day. One such attraction is Cité de la Mer which opened in 2002, it's a cylindrical aquarium and former nuclear submarine housed in the former trans-Atlantic terminal building. The town does not have huge shopping facilities, but there is a large number of smaller shops by the waterfront where lots of bargains can be found. There street markets which offer fresh produce, whilst the Cherbourg Old Town (La Vielle Ville) offers fish as its specialty. There's plenty of restaurants within walking distance from the waterfront offering all sorts of food at varying prices - from seafood to crepes and pizzas to salads. You'll also find that shops and banks open earlier and close later than those in the UK. On the outskirts of town you can find the large hypermarkets such as Carrefour at Octeville on the main N13 road. |
