Portsmouth - Caen Ferry
The Portsmouth - Caen route has several daily crossing operated by Brittany Ferries. Sailings take about 6 hours during the day and around 8 hours at night. PortsmouthPortsmouth is the second busiest port in the UK, each year 3.5 million people travel from Portsmouth to Continental Europe. It has excellent road links from London via the M3 and A3. Whilst it may not have the quickest journey times to France and Spain, it gives the passenger a more relaxing enjoyable journey. Portsmouth itself is the Royal Navy's historical home, the port is just north of the navel base. There's plenty to do at the terminal building, a gift shop and newsagent, a licensed bar, a cafeteria, a bureau de change, a cash point, a baby changing room, payphones, photo booths and public fax machine. At the end of the boarding lanes is another "Travel Centre" which contains a cafeteria, bureau de change, and gift shops. CaenThe historic Normandy city has one of the newest ferry ports on the Channel. It is a short drive away from the autoroute to Paris and is close to motorways leading south and west. Caen lies between the rivers Orne and Oden, it was one of the cities which suffered heavy damage during WWII and is said to have burned for a week before it's liberation. Whilst the second world war did a lot of damage, Caen underwent a rapid amount of expansion and is now a bustling University city with lots to see and do day and night. For those who love shopping there are many of the Parisian chain stores in the city. There are plenty hotels to suit all budgets. The Hotel Le Dauphin has been converted from a 12th century priory and has a well regarded restaurant and stone-wall bar. For those on a budget the Hotel Royal near the Place de la Republique comes highly recommended, with it's tidy neat rooms and friendly staff.
