Poole - St Malo Ferry
Ferries are provided by Condor Ferries, which makes a daily crossing to St Malo in France. Crossings take around 5 hours. PoolePoole harbour is one of the world's largest natural harbours and both cargo vessels and commercial vechicles are served by the busy commercial port. The terminal was built with three berths. These berths were first used by Brittany Ferries' route to Cherbourg, then by British Channel Islands Ferries for their services to the Channel Islands. The latter was later replaced by Condor's fast craft service. The town of Poole is centred around the Poole Quay. Attractions include the aquarium and the Poole pottery, although visitors to Poole say the best thing about the place is the general atmosphere. St MaloOne of the best ways to view the walled town and long golden beaches of St Malo is to sail into port early in the morning. The beaches near St Malo stretch all the way along the Northern Brittany Coast and are very easy to get into. St Malo is a small city but has a long history. St Malo is also known as the City of Corsairs because the corsairs, or privateers, preyed at will on the English ships crossing the Channel in the 18th and 19th centuries. The walls of the city are 20 feet thick. They were originally built in the 14th century, although most of what still stands was designed in the 18th century by the military architect Vauban. South of the citadel is the Grand Aquarium. The aquarium uses impressively lit tanks full of aquatic life to explain the "Mysteries of the Sea" in a fun, family orientated way. You can also take the underwater ride past a lost city and past wreckages on the "Nautibus". St Malo features several museums echoing the distinctive history and culture of Brittany. Le Mont St Michel, which is a spectacular monastery that is often cut off at high tide as it is built on a semi island. |
