Ferries To Holland
Holland, or The Netherlands to give it it's proper name, consists of 12 provinces within it's borders on mainland Europe. The constitutional capital of Holland is Amsterdam (the administrative capital is The Hague). Amsterdam is well known for it's liberal attitudes and the scenic canal system. Must see attractions in Amsterdam include the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank huis and Rembrandthuis. Interestingly, about 40% of the Dutch countryside lies under sea level. Hence the network of drainage canals and dikes that are so common around the country. Early Dutch history is linked to Belgium and Luxemburg; the three where known as the 'Low Countries' until the present day Netherlands boundaries were drawn up in the 16th century. Holland's most glorified period was the 'Golden Age' period from around 1580 to 1740. The era's wealth was generated by the Dutch East India Company which sent ships to the Far East in search of exotic spices and other goods, while colonising the Cape of Good Hope, Surinam, the Antilles and New Amsterdam (today's New York). After this period the British began dominating the world's seas. We offer several services to Holland; the most popular is from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, we also have a service from Hull to Rotterdam Europort. The ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland is operated by Stena Line. the Hull to Rotterdam service is operated by P&O North Sea ferries. |
