Ferries To France
France has long been the favoured holiday destination for ferry trips. The main reason behind this is largely down to the fact that France is simply the closest continental country to Britain. At the closest point the distance between Dover and Calais is only around 21 miles. The English channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and hundreds of ships and ferries pass through the channel daily. France itself is a country steeped in history, from it's beginnings as the Roman governed region of Gaul through to the 18th century Revolution and the 19th century Napoleonic period. France suffered heavily during World War I and II, losing much of it's empire, manpower and wealth. Since then it has recovered to become one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. If sightseeing is your thing, there will be plenty to keep you occupied during your visit. France has some of the most famous sights in the world. Paris is home to much of these sights, the Eiffel Tower is probably one of the best known site in Europe and is a must see for anyone visiting the city. Paris is also home to many pieces of art, including the world famous Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo at Le Louvre at the Musee du Louvre. For people looking for something a bit more exotic, there's the Moulin Rouge club, situated in the heart of the city. Of course there's more to France than the capital city, France has something for everyone, from the ski resorts in the French Alps, to the beaches and glamour of the French Riviera. The Normandy area has many tributes and reminders of the D-Day landings of World War II including many cemeteries of the casualties of the war. There are many different ferry routes to France, departing from ports all over the English south coast. Some of the options include; Dover - Calais, Folkestone - Calais, Newhaven - Dieppe, Portsmouth - Le Havre, Poole - Cherbourg and Plymouth - Roscoff. As well as connecting services between Jersey and Guernsey. The Eurotunnel is a great alternative for quicker journey times. The tunnel runs from Folkestone to Calais trains run frequently throughout the day. |
