Dover - Calais Ferry
The Dover to Calais ferry route is the most popular ferry route to France and continental Europe, largely due to Dover being the closest point in the UK to France. DoverThe town of Dover is known by most as a ferry port, but there is much more to Dover than ferries. Dover is a place steeped in history and there are many tourist attractions for the whole family. Dover castle is a must visit, it's network of secret tunnels run deep into the famous white cliffs. Climbing to the top of the castle is well worth the effort and you'll be rewarded with spectacular views. Past visitors to the castle include Henry VIII and Winston Churchill. On the waterfront you'll find the Dover esplanade, which features the Prince of Wales pier and has the White cliffs as it's background. The cliffs were made famous by the Vera Lynn song "White Cliffs of Dover", the song aimed to boost the morale of British soldiers fighting during World War II. There's also plenty of museums in Dover which cover everything from transport to life in Dover spanning from the Celts right up to World War II. You can take a sightseeing bus around town and there's also the "White Cliffs Experience" centre. Getting to Dover couldn't be easier, the M20 which comes off the M25 and the A2 from the M2 both lead directly to the ferry port. CalaisThere is much to see and do in the town of Calais. There's a range of shops which sell a variety of gifts, souvenirs and groceries. Famously, people tend to visit Calais to stock up on beer and wine which can be brought in bulk relatively cheap compared to UK prices. The town is divided into two parts; Calais-Nord is the old town that had to be rebuilt after the war. Calais-Sud is separated from Calais-Nord by canals. There's plenty of museums and other attractions to visit including the church of Notre Dame, which was built by the English and is the only example of a Tudor style church on the Continent. |
